Rodent Control in Kern Place, El Paso
Kern Place sits just east of UTEP and north of downtown, a neighborhood that started construction in 1914.
Peter E. Kern bought the land in 1886 and began building in November 1914, with engineer W.I. Rider helping to plan it. The neighborhood is bordered by Mesa Street, Boston and Robinson, Piedmont and Mesita. Madeline Park, named for Kern's daughter, sits in the middle, where Kern had 500 trees planted in 1915. The rock house known as the Castle stands at 1201 Cincinnati Avenue.
Homes in Kern Place vary a lot, and some were built by their owners. Many are now 80 to 100 years old, and old houses collect gaps: around original plumbing, where additions meet the first house, under porches and at roof edges. Mature trees bring shade and cover right up to the rooflines.
The Cincinnati Entertainment District adds restaurants and bars, with dumpsters and back doors that need regular rodent attention. Student rentals near UTEP turn over often, and rodent problems can carry from one tenant to the next if nobody seals the house.
If you own an older Kern Place home, plan on a careful inspection of the roofline under the trees and the joints between old and new construction. Those two spots account for many of the gaps in houses of this age.
