Rodent Control in Sunset Heights, El Paso
Sunset Heights is one of El Paso's oldest neighborhoods, a roughly 170-acre historic district bounded by I-10, Schuster Avenue and Mesa Street.
Building here dates to the late 1890s. John Fisher Satterthwaite began buying land in the 1880s, and the name Sunset Heights came from an El Paso Herald naming contest in 1901. The district went on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Its houses include Queen Anne, Tudor Revival, Mission and Spanish Revival, Classical Revival and American Foursquare designs, several by architect Henry C. Trost.
Pancho Villa owned property in the neighborhood in the 1910s, and stories of tunnels under some houses and under El Paso High School are part of local lore. Tunnels or not, old houses have plenty of hidden spaces: wall cavities, chimneys, old ductwork and gaps under wood floors.
Historic homes call for careful exclusion. Repairs should close gaps without damaging original trim, stone or stucco, and some exterior changes in a historic district may need review. Ask the provider to explain each repair before they make it.
Many Sunset Heights houses are now duplexes or rentals near El Paso High School and downtown. When rodents show up in one unit of a divided house, the shared walls usually mean the whole building needs a look.

Rodent questions from Sunset Heights
Can rodent-proofing damage a historic home?
It should not. A careful technician uses removable or matching materials and explains each repair first. Check with the city's historic preservation office before exterior changes.
Why do I hear rodents under my wood floor?
Raised floors leave a space underneath that rodents can use. Screening the foundation vents and sealing gaps closes it.
What rodents are most common in Sunset Heights?
House mice are the most frequent. Rats show up in older homes with gaps at the foundation or roof. A technician can confirm from droppings.
